The City Section Division I pairings are not bad, just a little disappointing. Yes, teams should be rewarded for playing tough opponents, but you need to win some of those games too.

I don’t understand how Dorsey (9-1) doesn’t get the No. 2 seed over Narbonne (7-3). Dorsey defeated the Serra League champion, Alemany. Dorsey almost upset unbeaten Redlands East Valley. Narbonne’s best win came over a young Gardena Serra team. The Gauchos also played tough against Long Beach Poly.

But because the rankings using CalPreps.com formula had Narbonne ahead of Dorsey, that’s what the committee of non-coaches chose to follow. Along with the fact Dorsey had to go to overtime to beat Garfield earlier in the season.

Hey, in the end, it doesn’t really matter. If all goes as expected, Dorsey will play Narbonne in the semifinals and settle things.

But you can’t convince me that Narbonne deserves the No. 2 seed over Dorsey.

In Division II, University and Manual Arts made the playoffs despite not winning a single league game.

John Aguirre, the assistant City Section commissioner, said the process worked well.

‘This process was tremendously better than it was before,’ he said. ‘There wasn’t any grandstanding. There was nobody looking out for their own.’
