Boys’ basketball: Mater Dei assumes first place in Trinity League

Making eight of 11 shots from three-point range in the first quarter, Mater Dei got off to a terrific start and came away with an 86-71 win over St. John Bosco in a battle for first place in the Trinity League.

Xavier Johnson scored 23 points, Katin Reinhardt 22, Elijah Brown 14 and Stanley Johnson 14 in helping the Monarchs improve to 19-2 and 6-0. St. John Bosco (16-5, 5-1) received 30 points from Isaac Hamilton.

Mater Dei opened a 32-11 lead after the first quarter. St. John Bosco closed to within nine points in the third quarter.

The two teams have a rematch next Friday at Mater Dei.
