San Fernando held its alumni baseball game on Saturday, and the Tigers and Coach Armando Gomez weren’t shy about letting everyone know they won the 2011 City Section championship. There were signs on the backstop, on the outfield fence, on the clubhouse and T-shirts, too.

Eight starters return, but the big question is pitching, and San Fernando started on the mound its new No. 1 pitcher, 6-foot-3 sophomore Alonzo Garcia.

Let me just say he’s a keeper. He’s got poise, confidence and intelligence, and even though he has never thrown a varsity pitch, he’ll be a good ace for the Tigers.

The alumni wasted no time trying to intimidate him. After Garcia walked the leadoff batter, one player shouted out, ‘Hey Gomez. Is this your ace?’

Garcia got a force out, a strikeout, gave up an RBI double and another strikeout. The varsity won, 9-4.

Garcia is an A student who will handle the pressure. Is he another David Lira? Only time will tell, but the Tigers look pretty solid for 2012.
