As in City Section basketball, the baseball season also could be a wide-open chase to end up at Dodger Stadium if the opening weekend of action is any indication.

San Fernando, the defending Division I champion, lost to Paraclete. Chatsworth, the runner-up last season, lost to West Ranch. El Camino Real is 2-0. Reseda Cleveland’s ace, Jack Hartman, showed he might be the best pitcher in the West Valley League with a shutout against Thousand Oaks.

Granada Hills is 1-1 with two good pitching efforts. Birmingham is 2-0 against weak opponents. Palisades got three hits from Cary Jacobson in a 14-3 win over Sun Valley Poly but was shut out by Oxnard. Kennedy got a good pitching performance but made too many errors in a loss to Valencia and came back to defeat Calabasas.

Banning, Narbonne and San Pedro will begin this week.

In conclusion, there’s no sign of a dominant team and everyone must wait to see if a dominant pitcher emerges.
