The opening day of the 54th annual Mt. SAC Relays ended with record-setting performances in the Invitational 4x1600 races.

In the girls race, Redondo’s Kayla Ferron, Lyndsey Mull, Rachel Bush and Cara Ulizio set the pace from the outset and established a new state record, clocking 20 minutes, 1.38 seconds to post the fastest time in the nation this year.

Phoenix (AZ) Xavier College Prep took second place in 20:14.08 while Studio City Harvard-Westlake was third in 20:40.17. Already staked to a huge lead, Ulizio ran the anchor leg in 4:55.

Then, in the boys race, Rancho Cucamonga’s foursome shattered the Mt. SAC record with a time of 17:17.99, the nation’s third-fastest time this year. Second-place Arcadia (17:27.30) and third-place Temecula Great Oak (17:32.95) also bested the previous meet record of 17:35.88, set by Los Angeles Loyola in 2009.

Heading into Saturday’s final day, Harvard-Westlake leads the girls competition with 32 points and the Los Angeles Loyola boys are in first place with 28 points.
