First place was on the line on Tuesday night in a Camino Real League game between L.A. Cathedral and Gardena Serra, and Cathedral defeated the Cavaliers, 6-1, to move into a first-place tie.
Cathedral Coach Scott Pearson made a surprise decision, pulling up freshman Henry Martinez from the junior varsity team and putting him on the mound. Martinez responded by allowing one run in 5 1/3 innings. Dominic Smith had three hits for Serra.
Freshman Willie Aguilar had two hits for the Phantoms, who lost to Serra, 10-0, earlier this season. The two schools play again on Friday at Serra.
