After taking a two-sets-to-none advantage in Saturday’s CIF Southern Section Division 4 finals, Los Angeles Cathedral learned you can never underestimate the heart of a champion.

Determined to capture its second straight title, Santa Monica rallied to level the match, but in the end the top-seeded Phantoms pulled out a 25-23, 25-22, 20-25, 23-25, 18-16 victory to cap off a Cinderella season.

It was the third straight time in the playoffs that Cathedral (27-8-1) was pushed to five sets, but the Del Rey League champions came through each time to capture their first CIF crown.

In the Division 5 final, second-seeded Palos Verdes Chadwick swept Calabasas Viewpoint, 26-24, 25-19, 25-17, to complete a perfect postseason run. The Dolphins (32-3) did not drop a single set in five playoff matches.
