The 94th annual CIF State Track & Field Championships have begun at Veterans Memorial Stadium at Clovis Buchanan High School and athletes will be competing for spots in Saturday’s finals.

Running events begin at 5 p.m. There will be three heats in each event through 400 meters with each heat winner and the next six fastest times qualifying for the finals. There will be three heats in the 800 meters with the top two placers in each heat plus the next three fastest times advancing. The 1600 trials consist of two heats, with the four best in each heat and the next four fastest times advancing.

The top nine finishers in each field event will move on to Saturday’s finals and qualifying marks do not carry over to the second day of the meet but will be used for seeding order. The girls discus, girls long jump and boys triple jump events are all underway.

The temperature on the track is over 100 degrees so the athletes must be careful not to overheat and expend too much energy with another round of competition tomorrow.

Check back throughout the day for updates and results.
