When it comes to summer road trips, the Santa Maria St. Joseph basketball team is taking one that requires lots of driving. Coach Tom Mott will be driving the team in a van that leaves Friday and will play 15 games in four different states.

The journey begins with a trip to Tempe, Ariz., to play in the Arizona State team camp. Then the Knights head for Las Vegas for a 6 p.m. game on Monday against Bishop Gorman.

Tuesday morning, the team leaves for Salt Lake City for games against Judge Memorial and Highland. On Wednesday, the team heads for Boise to play Timberline, then heads for Seattle on Thursday for a day of sightseeing before beginning the Washington team camp.

The team is scheduled to return to Santa Maria after next Saturday’s final games, arriving Sunday afternoon.

Three starters are back from last year’s Division 4A quarterfinalists, including 6-foot-7 Keith Datu, a junior.

Let’s hope the team is shooting a video to show family members back home.
