It took only two games into the 2012 season for Bellflower St. John Bosco to use a trick play I expected all summer once receiver A.J. Holman arrived from Orange Lutheran.

It was in the fall of 2009 that I went to a freshman game between Orange Lutheran and Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. The two quarterbacks were Holman for Lutheran and Kelly Hilinski for Notre Dame.

Holman was switched to receiver once he made varsity, but he’s a terrific athlete, and when he transferred to St. John Bosco, I knew there had to be a play put in to try out his arm.

So Coach Jason Negro gave Holman a shot on Friday on a reverse pass, and he fired a 47-yard touchdown pass to Shay Fields against Lakewood.

‘We kind of figured he could throw it,’ Negro said.

Now the rest of St. John Bosco’s opponents know the Braves have a former quarterback playing receiver. Next time check the scouting report from the local sportswriter.
