A nonleague game against Sylmar on Friday has been marked on the calendar by Arleta’s coaching staff for months. That’s because all the coaches, including head coach Dan Kelley, are Sylmar graduates. And assistant London Woodfin is a former Sylmar head coach.

The game also will feature a special halftime presentation honoring Sylmar’s 1992 City Section championship team. Former Sylmar Coach Jeff Engilman, who used to coach at Arleta, is scheduled to attend.

Arleta is 7-0 and winning the East Valley League. Sylmar has been showing improvement under first-year Coach Chris Richards and is 4-3 overall playing in the Valley Mission League.

Jamere Austin has been playing receiver and leading the Spartans.

Jose Jimenez has been the key player for Arleta. He has 4.3 grade-point average and never leaves the field, playing receiver, defensive back, returning punts and kickoffs and even kicking.

Arleta’s players know how much the coaches want this game.

Kelley and Jimenez will make an appearance on the SoCal Prep Report airing on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. on LA36. Also on the program is Venice quarterback Alexander Diamont and volleyball player Lauren Spurlin.
