The Star of India, a 121-year-old square-rigger and the showpiece of the San Diego Maritime Museum, must be moved from its traditional berthing spot because docking space is needed for a cruise ship, officials say.

Port District officials ordered the relocation over the objections of the San Diego Maritime Museum Assn.

The Star, docked just north of the B Street pier, is scheduled to be moved Thursday to the north side of Anthony’s Fish Grotto restaurant on the Embarcadero.

The former San Francisco Bay ferryboat Berkeley and the steam yacht Medea will be moved to the spot now occupied by the Star, said Paul Kettenburg, president of the museum association, which owns all three vessels.

“We’re not happy about it. It will mean spreading our ships out, and it won’t be good for attendance,” he said.

The repositioning of the historic ships was ordered because space at the B Street pier is needed for Princess Cruise Lines’ Pacific Princess, which will be using San Diego as its home port for the next three months.

Kettenburg said the district had advised him the move is permanent. The district provides berthing space for the museum’s vessels at no charge.
