While a city-created commission continues to investigate the status of peacocks in Palos Verdes Estates, officials here are designing a survey that will test the community’s pulse on the controversial issue.

City surveys will be sent to Palos Verdes Estates households in late January or early February to inquire about residents’ attitudes toward the wild birds, which have roosted in Peninsula neighborhoods since about 1920. The survey results and commission findings are expected to be presented to the City Council in March.

Palos Verdes Estates residents have been embroiled in a longstanding battle over the peacocks. While some residents adore the birds for their tradition and beauty, other abhor them for their noise, eating habits and copious droppings.
