Twenty elderly renters in this city will receive free weatherproofing, dead-bolt locks and smoke detectors next month as part of an experimental city program.

For the program, city officials have set aside $28,000 of a $1.1-million federal Community Development Block Grant received for the 1984-85 fiscal year from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The program is limited to senior citizens who receive their primary income from pensions or Social Security and receive less than $6,000 in annual income from other sources.

“It’s a temporary program--first come, first served,” said Edward Velasco, city housing specialist. Applications are available at the Apollo Neighborhood Center, 12458 Rives Ave., and must be turned in by Jan. 11, Velasco said.

City workers will supply and install the materials, Velasco said.

The offer is similar to a 2-year-old city program in which about 100 senior citizens have received free home improvements.
