An anonymous caller claiming to be a spokesman for the militant Animal Liberation Front claimed responsibility for planting a phony bomb in a restroom near the fur and sportswear departments of a Broadway department store in San Diego. An unidentified man telephoned San Diego media and the manager of the Fashion Valley shopping center about 1 p.m. and said, “We have planted electronically activated devices” in several major department stores. He also claimed to have planted a device in a local hotel that was hosting a fur sale. A sweep of the department stores by employees turned up a suspicious-looking, but empty, box at a Neiman-Marcus store. A brown paper bag containing a battery and non-flammable powder was found in the restroom at the Broadway with a note saying, “Furs are Dead.” No one was injured and shoppers were not evacuated.
