The La Palma City Council agreed to hold a special election June 5 to fill the vacancy left by the death of Mayor Tony Van Dyke. The council chose not to appoint an interim councilman. The newly elected member would serve the remainder of Van Dyke’s term, until November, 1988. Van Dyke died of heart failure at a council meeting Dec. 4.
