Pakistan’s banking system is switching to operations under Islamic law, and the government pledged that by June, it will ban Western-style interest payments, which are prohibited by the Islamic religion. But Pakistan says it will continue to repay its estimated $10 billion in foreign debts and the interest on them. The change is part of a vast Islamization of the government, legal system and business, spearheaded by President Zia ul-Haq.
