The third time wasn’t the charm for Thomas F. Ackenback.
After two unsuccessful escape attempts Tuesday, the 28-year-old Texan gave it another try Thursday, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Dick Olson.
Ackenback was en route to South Orange County Municipal Court on Thursday to be arraigned on charges of burglary and receiving stolen property when he bolted from a line of prisoners outside the building, Olson said.
Deputy Richard Cedarstaff tackled Ackenback and held him until other officers could subdue him, Olson said. Cedarstaff was treated for cuts and bruises; Ackenback was uninjured.
Ackenback had twice before tried to escape from San Clemente officers who arrested him Tuesday as a suspect in a motel burglary, Olson said. First, he leaped over a railing at the motel, but injured a leg. Taken to a hospital, he tried to get away there and ran through the parking lot before he was recaptured, Olson said.
Police said Ackenback is back in jail and, in addition to the burglary and stolen-property charges, he has been booked on suspicion of resisting arrest and attempting to escape custody.
Investigators said he also is wanted by authorities in Dallas, where he reportedly was involved in a shooting with police.
