Midfielder Perez Returns to Sockers’ Practice

Share

Midfielder Hugo Perez, who had been suspended without pay from the Sockers since Nov. 6, resumed practicing with the team Thursday.

Perez, 21, was suspended by owner Bob Bell after missing an exhibition game and practices. His reinstatement was ordered last week by a North American Soccer League arbitrator.

Perez, who wants to become a free agent, has contended that his contract is not valid because he signed an NASL contract and the Sockers are now in the Major Indoor Soccer League. But the Sockers contend that his $60,000 annual contract, which runs through Nov. 15, still is valid. The Sockers are members of both the NASL and MISL. A hearing on the matter is scheduled to take place on Jan. 21 in San Diego.

Coach Ron Newman said he is unsure whether Perez will be activated for Saturday night’s home game against Kansas City. Perez played sparingly in the Sockers’ Nov. 3 opener against Minnesota and has not played since.
