Arco halted an exploratory well in the South China Sea.
Los Angeles-based Atlantic Richfield Co. said the well south of Hainan Island was plugged and abandoned after it was determined that the deposit was not worth developing. More than 50 wells have thus far been drilled off the coast of China, and none have yielded a commercially significant quantity of oil.
