Booking facilities should be added to the county jails in El Cajon and South Bay, the San Diego County Grand Jury recommended in an interim report released Monday. The Sheriff’s Department currently books male prisoners downtown and in Vista. Women prisoners are booked and housed at the Las Colinas jail in Santee. El Cajon and South Bay are the two newest jails in the county, and they have the equipment necessary to book prisoners. The Sheriff’s Department, citing prohibitive costs and manpower shortages, has balked at opening the booking facilities at the two jails. The grand jury said the law enforcement agencies within the areas affected agreed on the need to book prisoners at the two jails.
