The State Department, reacting to Jordan’s announcement that it will by air defense missiles from the Soviet Union, said the purchase is consistent with the kingdom’s longstanding policy of buying arms from a variety of sources. A spokesman, Alan Reomberg, noting that Jordan has purchased materiel from the Soviets before, said the newest acquistion “does not appear to represent any fundamental change in Jordan’s traditional defense procurement practices.” Reports from Amman said the sale is believed to involve shoulder held surface to air missiles and radar for use against low flying aircraft.
