Local News in Brief : Simi to Pay $350,000 in Death of Motorist

Share

The City of Simi Valley has agreed to pay $350,000 in an out-of-court settlement to the family of a man killed in a collision with a city-owned truck in early 1983.

City Atty. John Torrance said an investigation indicated that the driver of the city truck, Grover F. Townsend, made a left turn onto West Los Angeles Avenue directly in front of a car driven by David Pielaet, 20, causing the collision.

The accident caused irreversible brain damage to Pielaet, and his life-support systems were later disconnected. Townsend was not prosecuted and continues to work for the city.

Torrance said the city admitted liability in order to settle the suit. The settlement will be covered by insurance and does not require City Council approval.

The suit, brought by Henry and Geraldine Pielaet, the victim’s parents, charged wrongful death and personal injury. It was to go to court later this month.
