Berkeley’s City Council gave final approval to an official city landmark designation for People’s Park, where anti-Vietnam War protests in the late 1960s led to violence. On May 16, 1969, 148 people were arrested and one man was shot to death by sheriff’s deputies trying to clear protesters from the land owned by the University of California. The new designation does not prevent the university from developing the space.
