Since 1966, when he campaigned door to door for Ronald Reagan in Ventura County, John S. Herrington has been a loyalist. On Thursday, his loyalty was rewarded with “the biggest honor I’ve ever had”--a Cabinet job as secretary of energy.

“I love the President,” said Herrington, 45, a lawyer from the San Francisco Bay area who currently is White House personnel director.

Until 1981, Herrington served Reagan only as an unpaid volunteer. He worked part time in Reagan’s two gubernatorial campaigns in 1966 and 1970 and in his unsuccessful 1976 bid for the GOP presidential nomination.

Herrington, who is known for his management skills, has been a trouble-shooter for the President. After serving as assistant secretary of the Navy, he was summoned to the White House in February, 1983, to help solve management problems in the President’s communications and public liaison offices. After that, he assumed his current White House job.

Herrington’s private law practice specialized in real estate, taxation and contracts, and he was involved in a property management business also.

He is a graduate of Stanford University and has a degree from Hastings College of Law.
