Dr. Daly, Ridden by Shoemaker, Disqualified; Handsome One Wins
Handsome One was declared the winner of Thursday’s $42,000 feature race at Santa Anita when his entrymate, Dr. Daly, was disqualified for interference in the stretch.
Dr. Daly, ridden by Bill Shoemaker, crossed the finish line three-quarters of a length ahead of Handsome One, ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye.
The stewards, however, ruled that Dr. Daly interfered with Western, who finished third under Ray Sibille, and Shamtastic, a fifth-place finisher under Pat Valenzuela, at the top of the stretch. Dr. Daly was placed fifth.
Western, who finished 2-lengths behind Handsome One, was placed second, and Fatih, the odds-on favorite, third. Fatih finished a length behind Western under Fernando Toro.
Handsome One earned $23,100 for the victory and paid $7.40, $3.20 and $2.10.
