The state’s 90-day tax amnesty program has garnered $12.5 million in delinquent sales and income taxes during its first 30 days. State officials said those applying for amnesty have included a prison inmate who said he will not be able to pay until he is freed in 1989, and a Southern California tax protester, who paid $9,000 and said he was glad to be back in the system. Tax amnesty allows people who owe income and sales taxes to pay them, plus interest, and avoid hefty penalties or criminal prosecution. It began Dec. 10 and ends March 15. The total collected includes $8.1 million in personal state income taxes and $4.5 million in state sales and use taxes. More than 13,500 people and firms have sought amnesty.
