Three youths were captured Monday after they reportedly led police on a 100-m.p.h. freeway chase, crashed their stolen car in San Clemente and fled on foot.

Officer Ken Daily, a California Highway Patrol spokesman, gave this account:

The chase began about 8:15 a.m. after a Cadillac reported stolen in Riverside on Jan. 2 sideswiped another vehicle in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 in Santa Ana. The other driver took down the license number and phoned the police.

As the car passed through San Juan Capistrano, sheriff’s deputies and CHP officers chased it.

The teen-age driver swerved off the freeway and up an off-ramp at Cristianitos Road near the Orange County-San Diego County line, and the youths fled on foot.

A police dog, Baron, sniffed out the trio about 10 a.m. and then, during a brief scuffle, helped officers subdue the suspects by nipping two of them.

The three were booked at Juvenile Hall on charges of grand theft automobile.
