WASHINGTON — The White House said Monday that it will allow news coverage of the private ceremony Sunday in which President Reagan and Vice President George Bush take their oaths of office for a second term.
Spokesman Larry Speakes said that three reporters and three still photographers, including representatives of the two major wire services, and one network television pool camera will be allowed in for the ceremony.
ABC, NBC, CBS and Cable News Network said that they will carry live broadcasts of the noontime ceremony.
Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart will administer the oath to Bush, with the vice president’s wife, Barbara, holding the Bible. Chief Justice Warren E. Burger will administer the oath to Reagan, with First Lady Nancy Reagan holding a Bible once owned by the President’s mother.
The ceremony is being conducted in private because Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, falls on Sunday. The swearing-in will be reenacted with all the traditional pomp and fanfare Monday on the west steps of the Capitol.
