An unarmed cruise missile, strapped to the underside of a U.S. B-52 bomber, was tested over frozen tundra in the Canadian north. The B-52, with two escort aircraft, flew from Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota on a 1,500-mile flight from the Beaufort Sea to British Columbia, then to Alberta. In the test, pilots on the B-52 manually followed flight directions provided by the missile, which has an on-board navigation system. In the next two tests, the missile will fly on its own.
