A Los Angeles physician, who pleaded no contest to an involuntary manslaughter charge in the death of a child he was treating, was placed on probation for five years and ordered to perform 500 hours of community service. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert T. Altman also fined Dr. Glenn Mahan, 55, of Studio City $1,000. Mahan was accused of ignoring signs that the three-year-old girl had been abused and failing to give her proper treatment. The mother of the girl is awaiting trial on charges of murder, child endangering and child beating. The child died of pneumonia. In return for a no-contest plea, which is legally equivalent to a guilty plea, prosecutors agreed that Mahan would not be sent to jail.
