Gonzaga Holds On to Defeat St. Mary’s, 57-55

Senior guard Bryce McPhee had 16 points, 10 rebounds and four assists as the Gonzaga Bulldogs held on to beat St. Mary’s, 57-55, in West Coast Athletic Conference basketball action Saturday night.

Gonazaga led 55-47 with 1:32 left in the contest, but the Gaels’ Bryan Shaw hit three consecutive jumpers to cut the margin to 55-53. St. Mary’s had a chance to tie the game with 10 seconds left, but Gerry Karczewski’s 20-foot jumper fell short.

Dwan Hurt’s two free throws with nine seconds remaining in the game gave the Bulldogs a 57-53 lead.

The Gaels’ Paul Robertson closed out the scoring with a 20-foot jumper with two seconds on the clock.

St. Mary’s forward Eric Cooks led all scorers with 17 points. Senior center Tim Ruff scored 13 points and guard Jeff Condill 11 for Gonzaga.

Gonzaga is 1-1 in WCAC play and 11-5 overall while St. Mary’s is 1-1 and 9-8.
