Principal Slain, 3 Wounded by Student Gunman

A rifle-toting teen-ager opened fire inside a junior high school today, killing the principal and wounding two teachers and a student. Authorities said a youth was taken into custody for questioning.

The shooting occurred at about 11 a.m. at Goddard Junior High School. About 90 minutes later, an officer spotted a boy walking through a field in a residential area near the school, carrying a rifle. He surrendered when approached by the officer.

Principal Jim McGee, 45, died at a Wichita medical center during surgery for a chest wound.

Teacher Dawn Swearingen, 32, was hospitalized in good condition with minor bullet wounds to the head.

Teacher Donald Harris, 39, and student Daniel Williams, 14, were hospitalized in fair and good condition respectively.

Goddard, a town of about 1,400, is located about 12 miles west of Wichita in south-central Kansas.
