College Basketball Roundup : DePaul Makes Free Throws, Beats Irish

Tyrone Corbin scored 18 points and DePaul, usually a poor free-throw shooting team, made its last eight attempts from the line Sunday to defeat Notre Dame, 71-66, at South Bend, Ind.

It was DePaul’s sixth straight win over the Irish. The Blue Demons, ranked 10th by the Associated Press and 14th by United Press International, are 12-3 this season. Notre Dame is 8-4.

Notre Dame trailed, 37-33, at halftime but outscored the Blue Demons, 11-2, midway through the second period to take a 50-47 lead with 8:21 left.

The lead changed hands twice more before DePaul’s Marty Embry, who finished with eight points, and Dallas Comegys, who scored 12, hit back-to-back field goals to give the Blue Demons a 57-54 lead with 5:08 left.

The Irish cut the margin to one twice more, but DePaul, which hit only three of its first seven free throws, got two from Embry, four from Kenny Patterson and two from Comegys to protect the lead.

Notre Dame missed 10 of its first 15 shots and fell behind, 23-10, with 10:47 left in a first half in which the Irish shot 39% from the field.

But the Irish scored 11 of the game’s next 13 points, closing the score to 25-21 on David Rivers’ three-point play with 6:48 left.

Rivers, a freshman point guard, finished with 21 points, hitting 9-of-10 free throws. Tim Kempton scored 13 and Ken Barlow 12.

DePaul beat Notre Dame, 95-83, last December.

South Alabama 89, North Carolina Charlotte 62--Terry Catledge had 36 points and a conference-record 26 rebounds to lead the Jaguars to victory in a Sun Belt Conference game at Mobile, Ala.

Catledge, who made 16-of-27 field goals and 4-of-10 free throws, broke the single-game rebounding record set by Lloyd Terry of the University of New Orleans in 1979. Terry had 25 rebounds in that game.

Also scoring in double figures for South Alabama were Jose Waitman (12) and Dexter Shouse (10). Waitman also had eight rebounds, while Shouse had six assists and six steals.

South Alabama, which shot 46% from the field, broke open a close game by outscoring UNC Charlotte, 29-6, in the final 12:54 of the first half to build a 41-17 halftime lead.

UNC Charlotte, which shot 36% from the floor, got no closer than 16 points at 47-31 with 13:54 to play.

Keith Williams led Charlotte with 12 points.

South Alabama is 3-1 in the Sun Belt Conference, 11-5 overall.

North Carolina-Charlotte is 0-4 in conference, 4-13 overall.

Texas A&M; 66, Texas 61--Kenny Brown scored 15 second-half points and Don Marbury added 13 to lead the Aggies past the Longhorns in a Southwest Conference game at Austin.

Brown opened the second half with five quick jump shots to pull A&M; from a 25-23 halftime deficit to a 35-30 lead with 13:19 left. Brown scored a game-high 21 points, followed by Marbury with 19.

John Brownlee led Texas with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Mike Wacker added 14 points.

The Aggies, who improved to 3-2 in conference, 12-4 overall, outrebounded the taller Longhorns, 30-23.
