One of four Roman Catholic clergymen in Nicaragua’s Sandinista government, Edgard Parrales, said he is giving up the priesthood rather than obey Vatican orders to resign his post. Parrales is Nicaragua’s ambassador to the Organization of American States. He and three other priests in the leftist government had refused to resign and devote themselves entirely to the church. Last week, all four were ordered by Nicaragua’s bishops not to perform ecclestiastical functions.
