A Los Angeles County welfare administrator accused of stealing $7,000 from the Department of Public Social Services surrendered in Los Angeles Municipal Court to face charges of grand theft, falsification of public records and theft of public funds, the district attorney’s office announced. Larry Novak, 44, of Palmdale, who worked in the welfare department’s Lancaster office, allegedly allowed three department employees who had taken jobs in private industry to stay on the county payroll on “sick-leave” status, authorities claim.
