Pena and Maldonado Agree to Contracts

Share

The Dodgers on Friday reached agreement on one-year contracts with pitcher Alejandro Pena, last season’s National League earned-run average leader, and outfielder Candy Maldonado, who batted .268 while playing primarily against left-handers.

Both players were eligible to file for salary arbitration, but their agent, Tom Reich, came to terms with Dodger Vice President Al Campanis. Reich had indicated that neither Pena nor Maldonado would agree to a drug-testing clause, as in the case of Mike Marshall, but apparently was satisfied when the Dodgers deleted the clause from Marshall’s contract.

Pitcher Fernando Valenzuela and first baseman Greg Brock, as expected, filed for arbitration before Friday’s midnight deadline, joining pitcher Carlos Diaz and catcher Mike Scioscia. Both Valenzuela, who was paid $1.1 million last season, and Diaz are seeking one-year contracts.

Campanis would not confirm that Pena and Maldonado had come to terms.
