A Japanese mother reportedly despondent because she could not return to her homeland drowned her son and attempted to drown herself and a baby daughter in the surf at Santa Monica Tuesday, Santa Monica police said.
Fumiko Kimura, 32, of Tarzana will be booked for investigation of murder and attempted murder when her condition permits, Sgt. Gregory Slaughter said. She was reported in serious condition at St. John’s Hospital.
Her son, Kuzutaka, 4, died at Santa Monica Hospital, and the 6-month-old baby, Yuri, was in critical condition in UCLA Medical Center.
Slaughter said two Loyola Marymount students, Nancy Pontius and Kevin Sliva, rushed fully clothed into the surf and pulled the unconscious victims ashore. Then two joggers, Brian Hirsch of Echo Park and Arthur Brock of Pacific Palisades, gave them cardiopulmonary resuscitation until lifeguards arrived.
