3 Students Picked for Santa Ana Hispanic Internship Program

Three college students have been selected to spend a year working in the City of Santa Ana’s Hispanic Internship Program. City Manager Robert C. Bobb said the three, who will begin work Monday, are Sam Vega, now seeking his master’s degree in business administration at UC Irvine; Gonzalo Vasquez, who is seeking a business administration master’s degree at Cal State Fullerton, and Corina Gonzales, a senior in criminal justice and human services at Cal State Fullerton. Already working in the management intern program is Eva Solorio, a Santa Ana College student.

The 1984 Citizen of the Year in Orange is Jim Silva, an insurance executive. Mark Minyard, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce’s selection committee, said Silva has a long list of accomplishments involving youth, the elderly and the community. He has served six years as president of the Friendly Center, a nonprofit organization serving 3,000 households.

Consulting engineer William R. Mills Jr., a court-appointed water master for the Santa Ana River for the past seven years, has been unanimously appointed to the Yorba Linda County Water District. M. Roy Knauft Jr., president of the water district, said Mills will fill the vacancy created by the recent death of Fred G. Clodt.

The new president of the Jewish Family Service of Orange County is H. Henry Hirsch of Huntington Beach. Other officers of the 20-year-old nonprofit service organization include Andy Pieter of Fountain Valley and Dr. Jay S.H. Masserman of Irvine, vice presidents; Michele Walot of Irvine, treasurer, and Dr. Stanley M. Kegel of Santa Ana, secretary.

The Santa Ana Council of the League of United Latin American Citizens has chosen 10 women to receive its annual Hispanic Women Recognition Awards on Feb. 9 in Irvine. The winners are Bernadette Chavez, education; Sue Montano Fenwick and Gloria Lopez, community; Graciela Hernandez, law enforcement; Susan Luevano, communications; Cora Oviedo, arts; Silvia Ramirez Moore and Amelia Trigeros, business; Sister Carmen Sarati, religion, and Dr. Martha Valdizieso Sarmiento, medicine.
