One afternoon while having lunch with my 14-year-old daughter she expressed confusion as to which war it was that we fought against ourselves, World War I or the Civil War. According to tests administered by the schools, she is well above average ability. Asked further about it, she said she never had any U.S. history in school.

Now I read that school administrators have been given the right to check students for drugs or other contraband. What this means is my child has been attending schools where possibly drugs were available but authorities could not effectively keep pushers from bringing their goods on campus, and in class no one has got around to teaching U.S. history.

None of this is why kids are sent to school. What’s going on?
