A Las Virgenes Unified School District middle school Thursday was named a winner of a statewide school excellence competition by the state Department of Education.

Lindero Canyon Middle School is one of three in Los Angeles County that will be evaluated further between March and May by federal experts who administer the National Secondary School Recognition Program.

Norma Carolyn, coordinator of the program for the state, said the Agoura Hills campus is one of 10 middle- and junior high school-level schools picked as California’s entries in the contest. There are about 1,000 such school schools in the state.

The Las Virgenes campus was selected on the basis of test scores and an “intensive” math and science curriculum, said school district spokesman Donald Zimring.

The national program, in its third year, will name its final winners in June, he said.
