San Diego Roundup : Mission Bay Park Is Site of Eighth Bike for Breath

San Diego Charger linebacker Linden King and Padre relief pitcher Craig Lefferts are the honorary chairmen for the National Asthma Center’s eighth annual Bike for Breath on Sunday at Mission Bay Park.

Experienced cyclists will ride one of two long distance routes of either 50 or 96.5 miles. Both routes will start and finish in the park. Through pledges, the cyclists will be raising money for the treatment, research, physician training and public education programs of the National Asthma Center. Registration for the long rides open at 6 a.m. and the ride starts at 7:30 a.m.

There are 11 shorter routes for inexperienced riders. The shorter courses are in Bonita, Coronado, El Cajon, Encinitas, Lakeside, La Mesa, Mira Mesa, Mission Bay, Ramona, University City and Vista. The short route rides will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The City of Lemon Grove will hold its third one-mile and five-kilometer run on Saturday at Palm Junior High School, 8425 Palm Ave. The one-mile race begins at 8 a.m. and the 5K at 8:10. Day of race registration is from 7 a.m. to 7:45.

The 5K course runs through Lemon Grove and ends at Lemon Grove Park, on Washington Street.

The 1985 San Diego Coaches Clinic will be held Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at UC San Diego.

San Diego State University track Coach Dixon Farmer, U.S. Olympic women’s volleyball Coach Terry Liskevych and Charger wide receiver coach Al Saunders will be among the many speakers who will cover a wide variety of sports, sports medicine and sports law.

The clinic is open to all coaches from any level of competition. The clinic is free if arrangements are made in advance. For advance reservations, contact Michael Newman at 697-1150. There will be registration on Saturday at UCSD’s Humanities Library, room 1118, at 8 a.m.

In conjunction with the 1985 San Diego Open, the first Open Golf Expo will be held Monday through Thursday at La Jolla Village Square. The Expo will feature state-of-the-art equipment displayed by national manufacturers and local pro outlets and free personalized instruction and video analysis by professional golfers.
