An escaped American prisoner was arrested by Mexican police on a murder charge in the killing of a San Diego-based Navy petty officer near Mexico City, a U.S. Embassy spokeswoman said Saturday. She said police arrested Roberto Malvais Brady, 50, in the Dec. 30 killing of Gregory Lawless, 23, a 2nd class petty officer at Miramar Naval Air Station. Also arrested was Gustavo Adolfo Alcantara Gonzalez, charged with being an accomplice to the murder, the Mexico City News reported. Lawless was killed Dec. 30 during a fight with Brady and Alcantara Gonzalez on a road near Cuernavaca, 40 miles south of Mexico City, police said. Lawless’ wife, Lydia, was beaten, robbed and abandoned nearby. Mrs. Lawless identified Brady Friday, the embassy spokeswoman said. The News said Brady, a native of El Paso, Tex., is a fugitive from a California prison and is wanted by the FBI for questioning in a string of assaults on women, credit card fraud, robbery and possibly another killing.
