Former television newscaster Dick Carlson spent nearly $800,000--including almost $500,000 of his own money--in his futile effort to beat San Diego Mayor Roger Hedgecock in last November’s election. Carlson, now a wealthy La Jolla businessman married to an heiress, was beaten handily, even though Hedgecock was under indictment for conspiracy and perjury involving alleged funneling of illegal campaign contributions into his 1983 mayoral campaign.
