Pope John Paul II, returning to the Vatican after a 12-day visit to South America and the Caribbean, said it is unlikely that the Vatican will play any role in mediating Central American conflicts. The pontiff’s comments seemed to contradict remarks from San Salvador’s Archbishop Arturo Rivera y Damas, who said in an interview with the Catholic radio station in El Salvador that “the Pope has his eyes on Central America and has said he is prepared, if necessary, not only to speak out but also to do more for a peaceful solution. . . .”
