The World : British Evict Missile Foes
More than 1,500 police and troops evicted 150 anti-nuclear demonstrators from an abandoned Royal Air Force base that is being readied to house 64 of Britain’s 160 cruise missiles by 1988. The squatters were ordered to tear down the ramshackle camp they set up three years ago. The troops then quickly erected a 6-foot-high, barbed-wire fence around the 7 1/2-mile perimeter of the Molesworth base, 70 miles north of London. Defense Secretary Michael Heseltine personally ordered the eviction operation to prevent delays in construction of the new facilities.
