College Basketball Roundup : Arkansas, Hutchinson Cross Up SMU, 69-66

SMU thought freshman Kenny Hutchinson was the Arkansas Razorback they wanted shooting free throws with the game on the line.

Hutchinson, hitting only 46% from the line and 29% from the field, made two free throws with 16 seconds left to clinch Arkansas’ 69-66 Southwest Conference victory over the fourth-ranked Mustangs Wednesday night at Fayetteville, Ark.

Hutchinson gave Arkansas a 67-64 lead. SMU’s Jon Koncak made a rebound basket with seven seconds remaining, but the Mustangs didn’t foul for five seconds. When they did, Arkansas center Joe Kleine made two free throws with two seconds left.

Arkansas (16-8 overall and 7-3 in the SWC) tied Texas A&M; for second place, one game behind SMU (18-3, 8-2).

Dayton 67, DePaul 63--Sedric Toney scored 22 points, including eight free throws in the final 1:04 at Chicago, and the Flyers (15-5) surprised the Blue Demons (14-6) for the second time in eight days, breaking DePaul’s 36-game home winning streak.

Utah State 86, CS Long Beach 59--Greg Grant scored 23 points, and the Aggies (12-6, 5-6) routed the 49ers (2-17, 0-11) in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Logan, Utah.

Georgia 74, Alabama 70--Cedric Henderson scored 19 points as the Bulldogs (15-5, 7-4) pulled into a three-way tie for the Southeastern Conference lead with Mississippi State and Florida by beating the Crimson Tide (14-7, 6-6) at Athens, Ga.

LSU 80, Mississippi State 65--Derrick Taylor scored 16 points, and Nikita Wilson and Ricky Blanton each added 15 to lead the Tigers (14-6, 8-5) past the Bulldogs (11-9, 7-4) at Baton Rouge, La.

Auburn 81, Florida 78--Carey Holland connected on 6 of 8 free throws in overtime, and the Tigers (13-7, 5-6) knocked off the Gators (15-5, 7-4) in an SEC game at Gainesville, Fla.

Mississippi 58, Tennessee 57--Eric Laird scored 22 points as the Rebels (7-12, 2-9) kept the Volunteers (15-8, 6-5) from moving into a first-place tie with an upset at Knoxville, Tenn.

Georgia Tech 81, Duke 71--Mark Price scored 22 points, and John Salley and Yvon Joseph each had 17 as the Yellow Jackets (17-4, 6-3) knocked off the fifth-ranked Blue Devils (16-4, 5-4) in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Atlanta.

Maryland 64, Wake Forest 62--Reserve guard Jeff Adkins hit 3 of 4 free throws in the final 10 seconds as the Terrapins (18-6, 5-2) held off the Demon Deacons (13-7, 4-4) at Winston-Salem, S.C.

Georgetown 71, Fla. Southern 39--Reggie Williams and Perry McDonald each scored 12 points, and the second-ranked Hoyas (20-2) rolled past the Moccasins (17-5) at Landover, Md.

Iowa 70, Minnesota 65--Freshman Jeff Moe sank two free throws with 14 seconds remaining at Iowa City as the Hawkeyes (19-5, 8-2) climbed into first place in the Big Ten by turning back the Gophers (11-9, 4-6).

Oklahoma 83, Nebraska 74--All-American Wayman Tisdale had 25 points as the Sooners (18-4, 7-0) set a Big Eight Conference record of 20 consecutive victories by knocking off the Cornhuskers (13-7, 3-4) at Norman, Okla.
