Oakland-based Safeway Stores Inc. said earnings for the year ended Dec. 29 were $185 million, an increase of less than 1% over 1983. In the final 16 weeks of the year, profits were $76.7 million, up 2% from the same period of 1983.

St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch Cos. said increasing sales of beer boosted its profit by 12.5% in 1984, including a 7.3% rise in the fourth quarter. For the full year, the nation’s largest brewer reported a profit of $391.5 million on revenue of $7.16 billion. In the fourth quarter, the company posted a profit of $71.9 million on revenue of $1.73 billion.

Morris Township, N.J.-based Allied Corp. said its net profit for 1984 was a record $488 million, compared to $98 million the year before. In the fourth-quarter, the company said net income was $99 million, compared to a loss of $233 million over the same 1983 quarter that resulted from discontinuing its machine-tool and liquid-fertilizer businesses. Sales rose 8% for the year and 6% for the quarter. Allied said its capital expenditures in 1984 rose to $878 million from $607 million in 1983.

Eli Lilly & Co. said its profit was up 7% in 1984, including a 2% rise in the fourth quarter. The Indianapolis-based firm said profit in 1984 increased to $490 million from $457 million in 1983, while quarterly profit rose to $118 million from $115 million. Sales rose 3% in both periods. The company produces a wide range of products in the areas of medical instruments, drugs, cosmetics and agricultural chemicals.
