The Treasury Department’s tax simplification plan would wipe out $16.5 billion in indirect federal aid for education, Albert Shanker, president of the American Federation of Teachers, said. The figure is the amount the real burden of school taxes would increase if taxpayers could no longer deduct state and local taxes from their federal tax returns, Shanker said at a Washington news conference with Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-N.Y.). Moynihan predicted that the plan “will (have) an astonishing impact on education.”
