Egyptian Relics Discovered in East Germany

The Egyptian Museum in East Berlin has discovered its “most sensational relics” of the last 35 years stored in an old trunk owned by an East German family, the official news agency ADN reported.

The agency gave few details about the discovery, saying only that an expert on Egyptian art uncovered the relics “by chance” in a trunk kept by a family in a town near Halle.

Researchers determined that the relics had been given by an impoverished German count to his servant in the 19th Century in lieu of wages. It was not clear how the pieces got to Germany.

The report did not say what the articles are worth or whether the owners, who were unaware of the objects’ historical value, were compensated.
